Youth Street Outreach
Youth Street Outreach (YSO) workers hit the streets of metropolitan Omaha and look for young people in trouble. They carry backpacks with basic needs and emergency supplies, and patrol areas where these youths tend to congregate. Outreach workers are trained to identify a youth in need and provide immediate information and services. Depending on the weather, they patrol downtown Omaha, Council Bluffs and other parts of the metropolitan area four to five days per week. YES employees wear tee shirts or sweatshirts clearly identifying them as Street Outreach Workers.
Outreach Workers invite homeless and street-dependent youth to the YES Drop-in Center. Young people are welcome to this safe place to have a meal, a shower, do laundry and meet other young people. The facility is open between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. The staff is available for a friendly talk and to provide information about education programs, problem solving, crisis intervention, advocacy, job searches, computer access, food, clothing and other emergency assistance.
A registered nurse from the Visiting Nurse Association is available three days a week at the Drop-in Center. In addition to basic health counseling, she can provide HIV, STD and pregnancy testing along with prevention counseling and parenting classes.
