Street Outreach Worker (Part-Time)

Primary Functions
Reporting directly to the Director of Street Outreach Services, the Youth Street Outreach Worker is responsible for providing basic needs, problem solving, crisis intervention, and referral information to runaway, homeless, street-dependent youth and youth in crisis.

Major Responsibilities
The Youth Street Outreach Worker shall be responsible for:

  • Assessing immediate needs of youth provide basic needs services as appropriate, including, but not limited to, first aid, food, hygiene products, community resources, clothing items, etc.
  • Providing referrals to appropriate community resources that meet their extended needs.
  • Documenting all youth contacts and activities in a timely fashion.  All significant incidents shall be immediately reported to the Director of Street Outreach Services.
  • Participating in meetings, conferences, and training sessions as directed.
  • Complying with all YES policies and procedures, applicable federal, state, and local laws/regulations related to the delivery of services to youth.
  • Developing effective working relationships with community organizations including, but not limited to, schools, churches, businesses, agencies, law enforcement agencies.
  • Advocating for youth in appropriate life arenas when appropriate. 
  • Providing appropriate crisis intervention and problem solving services to youth.
  • Identifying unmet youth needs and assisting in securing resources to address those needs.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisory staff.

Job Requirements

  • Nineteen years of age required, twenty-one years of age preferred.
  • Knowledge of youth development and pertinent issues affecting homeless youth and/or families.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Acceptance and respect for diversity.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with youth and community resources.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license and current auto insurance.
  • Bondable.
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to complete minor to moderate lifting.
  • Completion of thorough criminal history and background investigation.

Education and Experience

  • A high school diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in human service field such as psychology, sociology, social work, criminal justice or counseling preferred. Exceptions may be made when appropriate life experience can be shown.
  • In specific instances, bilingual ability (English/Spanish, etc.) may be required due to the nature of the population served.
